Read storyGopalpur is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Odisha, popularly called ‘Gopalpur on Sea ', with its golden sandy beaches, beautiful coastline, historic lighthouse, colonial architecture and serene seaside atmosphere. The picturesque beach town is set in the Ganjam district on the Bay of Bengal and has historical links to Burma and other Southeast Asian countries, being a significant maritime trading port. The old port, old buildings and the iconic Gopalpur Lighthouse are all remnants of its rich maritime history and can be found here with beautiful views of the surrounding coastline. The most popular beach of this town is Gopalpur Beach, which offers a soothing ambience, mild sea breeze, fishing boats and amazing sunrise and sunset vistas. Sonapur Beach, which lies nearby, is another stunning beach that is popular among tourists. There are various other nearby spots that travellers can visit, like Tampara Lake, Maa Tara Tarini Temple and the historic Rambha area near Chilika Lake. Gopalpur is also known for its fresh seafood and local Odia cuisine and also hosts the Gopalpur Beach Festival, which showcases local arts, music, dance and culture. Gopalpur's beach is a place of relaxation, historical sites, and water sports, offering a refreshing mix of coastal beauty, history, and relaxation.
The best time to visit Gopalpur is between October and March, when the weather is nice and pleasant, allowing visitors to enjoy the beaches, historical sites, lakes and other attractions that the area has to offer. For beach walks, watching beautiful sunrise/sunset views, visiting the old lighthouse and enjoying the tranquillity of the coast, the winter months are great. December is also a special time, when the Gopalpur Beach Festival is held, which includes cultural shows, local handicrafts, traditional food and entertainment activities. During the monsoon season (June to September), some of the activities are not suitable on the beaches because of the rain, rough seas and high winds. Summers (April - May) are typically warm and humid, but can be pleasant early in the morning or late in the evening for sea walks and relaxation.
