The Tarsar Marsar trek in Kashmir is a 7-day journey through the scenic beauty of the Kashmir Valley and the Himalayas. Starting in Srinagar, the trek continues to the beautiful Aru Valley, a popular gateway to trekking in the Pahalgam area. The track from Aru goes through forests, mountain streams and coloured meadows to arrive at Lidderwat and Shekwas. The highlight of the hike is Tarsar Lake and Marsar Lake; both are beautiful lakes of the Alps with the impressive landscape of the Himalayas.
As the lakes, green meadows and snow-covered mountain peaks change colour along the way, the scenery is spectacular. The walk also offers a chance to enjoy the serenity of Kashmir in an otherwise touristy area.   • Day-1 Srinagar – Aru Valley – Lidderwat +

    Pick-up in Srinagar and meet our guide. Post breakfast, head towards Aru Valley near Pahalgam, a scenic drive. Surrounded by beautiful green mountains, forests and meadows, it is the starting point of the Tarsar Marsar Trek. From Aru, begin your trek towards Lidderwat. The walk meanders through charming woodlands and along the Lidder River before slowly making its way into the idyllic mountain scenery. Arrive at Reach Lidderwat and set up camp. Enjoy the beautiful setting in the evening.

  • Day-2 Lidderwat – Shekwas +

    After breakfast, begin your trek towards Shekwas. The trail continues through beautiful alpine landscapes, forests and open meadows. The view is more and more breathtaking as the elevation rises, offering the opportunity to explore the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail is a quiet hike out of the tourist hotspot. Reach Shekwas and set up camp. Savour the night with a picturesque view of the mountains, green fields and nature. Approaching the lake, you'll discover lovely landscapes of the mountains and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Marsar Lake is surrounded by steep mountain slopes and offers a quiet place to enjoy the.

  • Day-3 Shekwas – Tarsar Lake +

    Once breakfast is finished, set off to explore the amazing Tarsar Lake. The path rises through lovely green meadows and mountainside land. As you near the lake, the scenery unfolds, and you get a great view of the stunning blue waters of Tarsar. Take the time to explore the area around the lake and indulge in the magnificent views of the mountains. Tarsar is one of the most memorable highlights of the trek with its peacefulness. Arrive at the site of the camp and take in the evening with the lovely alpine lake.

  • Day-4 Tarsar Lake – Marsar Lake – Homwas +

    Post breakfast, start the journey towards Marsar Lake, another breathtaking alpine lake of the Kashmir Himalayas. The path passes through stunning mountain scenery and provides views across to the neighbouring valleys. Marsar Lake is located amidst steep mountain slopes and offers a serene place to appreciate Kashmir's natural beauty. Once you've done a bit of wandering around Marsar, proceed towards Homwas. Arrive at the campsite and unwind from the day's hike.

  • Day-5 Homwas – Lidderwat – Aru Valley +

    After breakfast, start the journey back to Aru Valley. It winds down through the meadows, woods and lovely mountain scenery. Savour the last of the Tarsar Marsar area en route back to the lower valley. Arrive at Aru Valley and pick up your car. Head towards the lodging and rest at the end of the trek.

  • Day-6 Aru Valley – Pahalgam – Srinagar +

    On reaching Aru Valley, after breakfast, start the journey to Srinagar. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding valleys while on the way to Pahalgam. If you have time, you can spend a little time exploring the local market, or enjoy the nature of the mountains. Proceed towards Srinagar and make your hotel reservations. Take the evening to relax.

  • Day-7 Srinagar Departure +

    Have breakfast and then check out of the hotel as per departure time. Based on the time of the flight, you can avail some leisure time in Srinagar or go to the local shop for Kashmiri handicrafts and souvenirs. Then you will be transferred to Srinagar Airport to continue on your journey. The best season to do the Tarsar Marsar Trek is from July through September. The meadows are green, the lakes of the Alps are open to visitors, and the Kashmir Valley is a wonderful trekking destination during this time.

The Tarsar Marsar Trek is a moderate-level trek. Uphill climbs, rough and rocky mountain trails, and extended walking days are part of it. Walking and some basic fitness preparation are recommended.

The hike peaks at approximately 4,000 metres (depending on the route and trail conditions). During the hike, it is essential to drink water and to climb slowly.

Tarsar and Marsar are two beautiful lakes in the alpine region of the Kashmir Himalayas. Generally, Tarsar is more accessible via the trekking route, while Marsar is located with trekking shoes, warm layered clothing, thermal wear, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a water bottle, personal medicines, a comfortable backpack, rain protection, and a headlamp. With preparation and experienced trekking support, it can be a good trek for fit beginners. People who are new to hiking should train by walking regularly, climbing stairs and doing cardio before they do the hike.
