Goechala Trek Sikkim is one of the most spectacular high-altitude trekking experiences of the Eastern Himalayas. This 10-day trek lets you explore the scenic beauty of Sikkim and witness snow-covered mountains, lush forests, alpine meadows, waterfalls and more. The trail starts from Bagdogra and leads towards Yuksom, the origin point of the Goechala Trek. The trail from Yuksom passes through the thick jungle and picturesque mountain views to reach Tshoka and Dzongri. The major highlights of the trek include the magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and other surrounding peaks from one of the fortresses, Dzongri. The trail then heads towards Thansing and then ascends to higher mountain terrain to arrive at the Goechala viewpoint.
The Goechala route is known for the breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks, especially the impressive Kanchenjunga range, which it offers. The route includes a moderate trek through a forest of beauty, a meadow of peace, mountain streams and the wonderfully unique culture of Sikkim.   • Day-1 Bagdogra – Yuksom – Welcome to Sikkim +

    Meet at Bagdogra Airport and proceed to meet the representative. Start your scenic journey towards Yuksom, the traditional starting point of the Goechala Trek. The route is a scenic drive through the beautiful mountain roads, forests, valleys and the traditional Sikkimese villages. Arriving at Yuksom, get a room and sit back and enjoy yourself. Settle in on the eve of the next hike and relax in this sleepy historic mountain town.

  • Day-2 Yuksom – Sachen +

    Once you have breakfast, you can start hiking from Yuksom to Sachen. The trail goes into a beautiful dense forest. This is one of the most scenic sections of the journey as the trail passes through beautiful rhododendron forests and gradually reaches higher elevations; take a short hike to a nearby viewpoint. The higher point offers a breathtaking route with a glorious view of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and the Prek Chu Valley (forest) teeming with rhododendron, magnolia and other Himalayan plants.
    It is a quiet forest journey which follows the river as it crosses mountain streams to the summit. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and spectacular natural surroundings. Arrive at the campsite and camp in Sachen. Take the evening off to chill and plan for the day ahead.

  • Day-3 Sachen – Tshoka +

    Following a breakfast of your own, head on up towards Tshoka. The trail gradually climbs through dense forests and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Cross streams and wooden bridges en route to the picturesque community of Tshoka. The vista starts to open up as you gain altitude. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and mountain views from the campsite.

  • Day-4 Tshoka – Dzongri +

    Following breakfast, set off towards the Dzongri. It is one of the most picturesque parts of the route as it winds through the lovely rhododendron woods and slowly climbs into the higher alpine country. Tree cover decreases as you ascend and the views of the surrounding mountains grow more spectacular. Arrive in Dzongri and set up camp. Enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery and relax after the day's trek.

  • Day-5 Dzongri – Dzongri Acclimatization and Exploration +

    It is a day reserved for getting used to the terrain and taking some time to explore the locality of Dzongri. Get up early and, depending on weather and trail conditions, go to a viewpoint nearby for a short hike. The vantage point is also high, which offers a grand vista of Kanchenjunga and other peaks of the Himalayas. Breakfast and then a full day of rest & acclimatisation while still in camp. This day is also when you can get ready for the high elevation stretches that are coming up.
    Overnight: Dzongri Campsite
     

  • Day-6 Dzongri – Thansing +

    Following a good breakfast, set off for Thansing. This trail slowly moves away from the meadows of the Dzongri and passes through the beautiful high-altitude landscapes. The trail offers a stunning vista of the surrounding peaks on the way to the Prek Chu Valley. Follow the mountain track to Thansing. Take a rest at the campsite and relax amidst the lovely landscape of the Himalayas.

  • Day-7 Thansing – Goechala Viewpoint – Kokchurang +

    Begin your hike early in the morning for the most significant day of the hike. Start the run-up to the Goechala viewpoint. An early start will allow for the spectacular sunrise over the Himalayan peaks. On reaching this point, you can enjoy stunning views of Kanchenjunga range and the surrounding mountains Airport to fly off for your onward journey. Enjoy unparalleled memories of the Goechala trek, grand Kanchenjunga sightseeing, and beautiful forests. Take a bit of time to enjoy the fantastic views before starting the descent. Head back to Kokchurang and check in to the campsite.
    Overnight: Kokchurang Campsite
     

  • Day-8 Kokchurang – Tshoka +

    On the return journey head back towards Tshoka after breakfast. The trail slowly descends through lovely forests and mountains. Take in the more scenic areas as you descend from the high altitudes. Arrive at Tshoka and enjoy a meal and a rest at the campsite at the end of the day's hike.
    Overnight: Tshoka Campsite
     

  • Day-9 Tshoka – Yuksom – Bagdogra +

    With breakfast, start the last hike to Yuksom. The path plunges into the woods and a stunning mountain landscape. At Yuksom, pick up your car and start the journey towards Bagdogra. Cherish the beauty on the way through the mountains and valleys of Sikkim. Upon landing at Bagdogra, get a hotel room and unwind.

  • Day-10 Bagdogra Departure +

    Breakfast and check out of the hotel as scheduled. From here, you can be transferred to Bagdogra Airport for onward travel. Carry with you some of the most memorable experiences of the Goechala trek, the great sight of Kanchenjunga, beautiful forests, alpine meadows and the serene Himalayan scenery of Sikkim. Your Goechala Trek Sikkim 10 Days ends with your departure from Bagdogra.

FAQ's

Spring and Fall (April to May and October to November) are generally the best seasons to trek Goechala. In spring, rhododendrons bloom, and in the autumn, mountain views are clearer.

Goechala Trek is a moderate to challenging high-altitude trek. Involves prolonged days of trekking, sharp ascents and descents, unpredictable weather and high-altitude sections. Previous trekking experience and good physical fitness are beneficial.

The maximum height of the Goechala route is around 4,600 metres, depending on the viewpoint and access allowed for the trek. Acclimatisation to the higher levels is necessary.

Experienced guides and proper preparation is required for the trek if it is attempted by a fit and well-prepared beginner, but it is not as easy as many other beginner-level Himalayan treks. Regular walks, cardio training and preparation for long trekking days are recommended.

Strong trekking shoes, warm layered clothing, thermals, waterproof jacket, gloves, woollen socks, sunglasses and sun cream, water bottle, personal medicines, headlamp, comfortable backpack. For the colder nights in higher camps, warm clothes are a must.

The trek is especially renowned for the panoramic views of the mountains of Mount Kanchenjunga and others. One of the highlights of the Goechala trek is the sunrise from the higher part of the trek.
