About Sandakphu

Sandakphu, the ‘Land of Sleeping Buddha ', is one of the most spectacular mountain destinations in West Bengal, which boasts amazing Himalayan vistas, snow-clad peaks, mesmerising trekking routes, alpine forests, colourful rhododendron valleys and serene mountain villages. The place is situated at a height of about 3,636 metres (11,929 feet) in the Darjeeling district and is on the Indo-Nepal border. This is a famous destination for its stunning views of four of the world's highest mountains, namely Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. Sculpted into the shape of the sleeping Buddha, the spectacular Kanchenjunga range is one of the area's most striking attractions.
Sandakphu is also a popular tourist destination for trekking enthusiasts, nature lovers, photographers and adventure tourists. The renowned Sandakphu - Phalut Trek travels through the stunning Singalila National Park, through lovely mountain villages, through thick forest and through gorgeous ridgelines. Other attractions include Tumling, Kalipokhri, Gairibas, Manebhanjan and the beautiful village of Srikhola. The area is also home to some rare birds from the Himalayas, beautiful seasonal rhododendron flowers and red pandas. Sandakphu is filled with unforgettable experiences and adventures in the mountains, ranging from breathtaking sunrise views over the peaks of the Himalaya to peaceful mountain villages, thrilling trekking adventures and the beauty of alpine landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Sandakphu

April-May and October-November are considered the best seasons to visit Sandakphu, with pleasant weather, relatively clear skies, and spectacular views of the Himalayas, which are suitable for trekking, sightseeing, photography and exploring mountain villages. The spring season (April-May) is also a gorgeous time of year because the forests are dotted with rhododendrons, magnolias and other seasonal blooms. Additionally, October and November are great times to visit, as the weather is post-monsoon, offering beautiful panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga and other peaks in the Himalayas. During the winter months (December to February), the weather is very cold, with frost and sometimes snow, and makes for wonderful snowy landscapes, but conditions for trekking can be difficult. Heavy rainfall, heavy fog, soft trails and sometimes landslides make trekking and road travel difficult during the monsoon season June to September. Warm clothes are recommended for visitors who wish to visit Sandakphu all year round, as temperatures can drop significantly, particularly at night.
