About Sambalpur

Sambalpur, located in the heart of the eastern part of India, is one of the most intriguing places in Odisha, with its ancient temples, magnificent dams, traditional handloom textiles, scenic landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The city is located on the banks of the Mahanadi River and has a rich history and has been an important part of the cultural and historical development of western Odisha. The main landmark of Sambalpur is the sacred temple of Goddess Samaleswari, known as the presiding Goddess of the area. Another top attraction is the incredible Hirakud Dam, one of the longest earthen dams in the world, with stunning views of the expansive reservoir, the hills and the gorgeous sunset. The city is also renowned for the Leaning Temple of Huma (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Ghanteswari Temple (dedicated to the revered Goddess, as well as thousands of bells donated by the devotees). Gudguda Waterfall, Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary and Usakothi Wildlife Sanctuary are places for nature lovers. Sambalpur is also famous for its traditional Sambalpuri Ikat sarees, elaborate handloom weaving technique, folk songs and colourful festivals like Nuakhai and Sital Sasthi. Whether you're visiting the ancient temples, admiring the stunning views of the dam or learning about traditional weaving methods, Sambalpur promises an immersive blend of spirituality, nature and cultural events, making it a memorable destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Best Time to Visit Sambalpur

October to March is the perfect time of the year to visit Sambalpur, with the weather being pleasant and comfortable, allowing you to visit the temples, dams, waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, and more. Winter is the perfect season for wildlife safaris, nature walks and panoramic views of Hirakud Dam, as well as sightseeing. The area around the Hirakud Reservoir is especially good for birding from November to January, and it offers excellent opportunities for exploring the surrounding natural areas. During the monsoon season (July – September), the area turns into a green paradise, and waterfalls like Gudguda are definitely worth a visit; however, heavy rains can make outdoor pursuits difficult. The summer season (April-June) is normally hot and dry, sometimes very hot. May or June, however, is when visitors can witness the colourful Sital Sasthi festival, which displays the rich religious heritage and cultural festivities of Sambalpur.
