About Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is also known as ‘Island of Lord Shiva’ and is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Madhya Pradesh, renowned for its ancient temples, sacred ghats, spiritual aura and picturesque island surrounded by the Narmada River. The town is situated on Mandhata Island, which is thought to be in the shape of the sacred Hindu symbol 'Om', in the Khandwa district. The Omkareshwar Temple is also significant, housing the Ganesha Jyotirlinga temple of Lord Ganesha. Omkareshwar is also very important as it contains one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva called Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. It has a long tradition of religious life and is a popular pilgrimage destination, with thousands of visitors coming to worship there every year. Its most notable attractions include Omkareshwar Temple, Mamleshwar Temple, Siddhanath Temple and Gauri Somnath Temple. The town is charming with the holy river Narmada, beautiful suspension bridges, ancient stone architecture and calm river banks. Omkareshwar is also famous for its traditional Omkareshwar Parikrama, a spiritual walk around the island. Whether you're going to the ancient temples for blessings, taking a boat ride on the Narmada River or visiting the sacred ghats or enjoying some peaceful spiritual surroundings, Omkareshwar is an enriching travel experience.

Best Time to Visit Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is best visited from October to March, when the weather is comfortable to visit the temple, see sights and explore the holy island. The Omkareshwar Temple, Mamleshwar Temple and the Narmada River offer a great opportunity to visit during the winter months and also to complete the island Parikrama. The monsoon season (July–September) is also a good time to visit, as the surrounding hills and landscape turn green and the Narmada River looks beautiful in this season. But boating and river sports may be impacted by heavy rain. The summer season (April-June) can be very hot and can make it less comfortable to visit the temples during the daytime.
