Khajuraho

The city of Khajuraho is famous for housing the heritage of humanity. The historic city of Khajuraho is located in Madhya Pradesh at the foot of the Vindhya mountain range. There is a collection of UNESCO World Heritage temples including Hindu and Jain places of worship. They are famous for their impressive and delicate sculptures representing different aspects of life: spirituality, love, friendship, sports, royalty, and, above all, impressive art. According to their geographical location, the temples are classified into three groups: East, West, and South. The construction of the complex believed to have taken place over a relatively short period of more than 100 years, between 950 and 1050 A.D., consists of 22 temple structures that remain from the original group of 85. They were forgotten for hundreds of years, then rediscovered and restored in the 1850s.

They were designed and built during the reign of the Chandela dynasty. The living sculptures on the walls of the temples are transformed into works of art through ornate craftsmanship and are an ode to life, love, and joy.
A fascinating story tells how the city got its name. The Chandela rulers are said to have started building the temples and had the entire area surrounded by a wall. The wall had eight gates flanked on both sides by khajur or Phoenix dactylifera trees, which are found in abundance in this region. The temples are therefore called khajura vatika, or Khajuraho bearing.
