About Kanha

Kanha is known as “Land of the Barasingha” and is one of the most beautiful wildlife places in Madhya Pradesh with dense sal forests, extensive grasslands, abundant wildlife and magnificent Bengal tigers. Kanha is located in the Mandla and Balaghat districts and is home to the famed Kanha National Park, which is one of India's largest and most famous national parks. Kanha was designated as a National park in 1955 and it was a significant location for the conservation of the endangered hard-ground barasingha or swamp deer. The natural habitat of the park is breathtaking, comprising lush green forests, open meadows, bamboo groves, rivers and beautiful water bodies, which are home to a number of bird species, deer, wild dogs, sloth bears, leopards and tigers. It's also said that Rudyard Kipling's famous book, The Jungle Book, was inspired by Kanha. Kanha is a place for nature lovers, wildlife photographers and adventure-seekers alike with its serene forest ambience, abundant wildlife and exhilarating jungle safaris.

Best Time to Visit Kanha

The months of October to March are wonderful months for Kanha, with pleasant weather that is ideal for wildlife safaris, birding and enjoying the lovely forest scenes. Especially during the winter season, you can see different species of birds and you can enjoy comfortable jungle excursions as well. Another popular time to visit is from April to June, as the warmer months make a tiger sighting more likely, as the animals tend to come out in search of water. The monsoon season (July - September) is when new foliage appears and when the forest is rejuvenated; however, the main safari areas are usually inaccessible during this time due to the park management activities and breeding season. Opening dates and availability of safaris may change from time to time, depending on the season and the forest authorities.
