Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is a splendid historic city located close to Agra, famous for its monumental Mughal architecture, stunning sandstone buildings and the intriguing royal history. Established by the emperor Akbar in the 16th century, the city was for a relatively short time the capital of the Mughal Empire before its abandonment. Today, its amazingly preserved monuments give a glimpse of the architectural vision, cultural diversity and grandeur of Akbar's reign. The Mughal, Persian, Hindu and Jain architectural influences can be seen in its intricately carved pillars, courtyards, gateways, palaces and religious structures, which make it a historic complex. The towering Buland Darwaza, the Jama Masjid, the Panch Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas and the Tomb of Salim Chishti are among the major landmarks. Fatehpur Sikri is also the place of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, whose blessings are claimed to have attended Akbar's heir's birth. In addition to its impressive buildings, the neighbourhood has local markets, traditional crafts, and a glimpse into the life of rural communities. Fatehpur Sikri is a place that has a lot to offer, from exploring its magnificent palaces and courtyards, to learning about Mughal history, and marveling at its intricate stonework.
