Read storyCuttack is the “Silver City of India” and the “Millennium City”, one of the oldest and most historically rich cities in Odisha, celebrated for its rich heritage, ancient monuments, traditional silver filigree and colourful cultural festivals. It is a city with a history of over a thousand years and used to be the capital of Odisha until 1948, when Bhubaneswar had the distinction of becoming the new capital. Cuttack is located between the two rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi and has been a significant city in the political, cultural and commercial history of the region. The historic Barabati Fort, which was once a magnificent royal stronghold, is one of the city's iconic attractions, while the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Birthplace Museum, Cuttack Chandi Temple and Qadam-i-Rasool provide glimpses into the city's religious and historical heritage. Cuttack is also famous for its exquisite art of silver filigree, named Tarakasi, and grand celebration of Durga Puja, which is characterised by beautifully decorated Durga Puja idols and elaborate silver tableau. The famous Bali Jatra festival, which celebrates Odisha's ancient maritime trade connections, adds to the city's cultural charm. Exploring the historic forts, visiting the museums, shopping for authentic Odia jewellery, enjoying riverside views, tasting Odia street food and much more makes Cuttack a wonderful mix of history, culture and local experiences.
October to March is the best time to visit Cuttack for pleasant weather and a comfortable experience of viewing its historical monuments, temples, museums and local markets. Winter is perfect for sightseeing, heritage walks, and outdoor attractions. November is a very special time as the well-known Bali Jatra festival is held around the Kartika Purnima date, which fills the city with vibrant fairs, cultural shows, native handicrafts and local cuisine. One other time to enjoy Cuttack's brilliant tradition and beautifully decorated pandals is Durga Puja, which is normally observed in the month of September or October. During the monsoon season (July to September), rain and green foliage will return, but travel plans may be disrupted. Outdoor sightseeing is less comfortable during the summer months (April-June) because it is hot and humid.
