Read storyBerhampur, the Silk City of Odisha, is one of the most colourful cities in southern Odisha, well known for the beautiful beaches, ancient temples, colourful markets and traditional silk sarees, along with its rich cultural heritage. Located in the Ganjam district, the city is an important commercial and cultural centre of the region. Berhampur is a unique amalgamation of Odia and Telugu culture in terms of festivals, culture, architecture and food. Berhampuri Patta silk sarees are famous for their unique designs, intricate weaving and traditional craftsmanship and are particularly popular in the city. The sacred Maa Tara Tarini Temple, located on top of the beautiful Kumari Hills overlooking the Rushikulya River, is an important religious place in the area. Gopalpur beach, Tampara lake, Taptapani hot springs and Potagarh fort are some of the nearby places where you can enjoy nature, history and adventure. The city is also renowned for its lively markets, traditional arts and crafts, and mouth-watering seafood. Whether you're delving into the ancient temples, enjoying a shopping spree for gorgeous silk sarees, unwinding on golden beaches, soaking up the scenic lakes or indulging in the authentic delicacies of Odisha, Berhampur has something to offer everyone.
Visiting Berhampur during the months from October to March is ideal for pleasant weather and comfortable conditions, as well as a time to explore the city's temples, beaches, lakes, markets and surrounding attractions. Winter is a great time to visit Gopalpur Beach, enjoy outdoor activities around Tampara Lake, sightsee at Tara Tarini Temple and visit during the winter. The months of November, December and January are best to explore the natural beauty of Gopalpur and the surrounding area. The monsoon season (July–September) results in rain and greenery in the area, enhancing the beauty of the hills and waterfalls nearby, but sometimes the rain can be heavy, which may disrupt outdoor events. The summer season (April-June) is normally very hot and humid and is not as comfortable for visiting. But traditional festivals like Thakurani Yatra, which highlight the city's rich religious heritage and cultural festivities when held, also occur during this time.
