About Baripada

Baripada is a picturesque town located in the northern part of Odisha, known as the “Cultural Capital of Mayurbhanj” due to its rich heritage of the kings, ancient temples, majestic waterfalls, green forests, and colourful lifestyles of the tribal people.  The town is located in the Mayurbhanj district, which is home to one of India's most beautiful and unusual wildlife areas: Similipal National Park. The Bhanja dynasty has a rich history in Baripada, which is reflected in the city's temples, palaces, and traditional architecture. The town also has many religious sites, including the famous Haribaldev Jew Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, and Maa Ambika Temple, which is another important religious site. The royal history of the area is reflected in the nearby beautiful heritage property of the Belgadia Palace associated with the Mayurbhanj royal family. Baripada is also famous for its grand Rath Yatra featuring the grand chariot of the Goddess Subhadra, a very special example of which is that the chariot is pulled by the women of the village. The scenic Barehipani and Joranda waterfalls, the calm Devkund Waterfall and the lush forests of Similipal are just a few of the areas nature enthusiasts can explore. The local area is also known for the Mayurbhanj Chhau, a traditional martial dance, colourful ethnic festivals and traditional local cuisine. Baripada is a place that promises nature, history, and culture, from a visit to the royal monuments and ancient temples to watching the wildlife on safaris, experiencing tribal culture and admiring the impressive waterfalls.

Best Time to Visit Baripada

The months of October to March are ideal for visiting Baripada, as the weather is pleasant and the conditions are comfortable for visiting the temples and other places of interest, as well as exploring the waterfalls and surrounding areas for wildlife. Similipal National Park is a wonderful place for safaris and trekking during the winter months, when you might be able to see wildlife, hike through forest trails and experience the epic Barehipani and Joranda waterfalls. This is the ideal time for nature lovers, birdwatchers and adventure seekers, from November through February. The waterfalls are particularly beautiful in the monsoon season from July to September when the surrounding forests and hills turn green. Heavy rain may affect outdoor activities in the forest and access to some areas. Sightseeing is less comfortable during summers (April to June) as the weather is hot and humid. But any traveller visiting during this period can enjoy the famous Mayurbhanj Chhau Dance festivals and the celebration of traditional culture as per their schedule.
