Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Kerala

As the fact itself shows, the aviary used to be a tree plantation. In the 1840s, Alfred George Baker laid the foundation for the village of Kumarakom and thus the aviary by reclaiming 500 acres of wetlands from Lake Vembanad. Subsequently, Baker’s descendant, Henry, developed the aviary and made it more attractive to attract tourists. In earlier times, the aviary was known as Baker’s Estate. It is often home to a wide variety of birds, including species such as waterfowl, egrets, herons, cormorants and Brahminy kites. One leisurely rehearsal in the lush green forest will show tourists the simplest of Kumarakom. It is best to take a cruise along Lake Vembanad to experience the sanctuary.
