The Periyar National Park

The Periyar Park is located in Kerala, South India, in part of the Western Ghats.

Access to Periyar Park

There are frequent air, rail and road connections to Periyar Park.

By air: The city of Cochin is 200 km from Periyar and Tamil Nadu is 140 km from the airports here.

By rail: the nearest railway station is Kottayam which is 114 km away.

By Road: The nearest town to Periyar is Kumily and is well served by private buses and government bus services from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai located in Tamil Nadu.

The ideal time to get to Periyar Park

It is best to visit Periyar Park between October and June.

The park and safari opening and closing times

6 a.m. is park opening time and 6 p.m. is park closing time. There are two types of safari in Periyar Park:

Boat cruise in the jungle for half an hour, so the times are 7:25, 9:15, 11:15, 1:30 and 4:00.

The Jeep Safari is divided into two different variants :

The night safari, which is scheduled from 11 pm to 3 am.

The full-day safari, which is scheduled until 3 pm in the evening.

The safari and other expenses

An entry fee for Indian citizens to Periyar Park is Rs. 50, whereas for foreign tourists it is about Rs. 500. For the jeep safari, it is about Rs. 2,500 for Indian citizens and Rs. 4,000 for foreign tourists.

Adhere to the principles and regulations stipulated by the Kerela Tourism Department Corporation and hence the Indian Department of Forests.

Additional attractions at nearby Periyar Park

Lake Periyar: Since Lake Periyar is located in the sanctuary, also the reserve is named after this beautiful lake. On this lake, a boat safari is allowed and tourists can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake.

Most pilgrims visiting Periyar Park are attracted to the temple. One believes that prayers are said to be made in this 2000-year-old temple only once a year on the full moon day between the months of Aril and Aïl.

Pullumedu: The area of Pullumedu is legendary for its nature and wildlife reserves. It is located at a distance of 43 km from Thekkady. Some of the main attractions in this area include the Shri Ayappa Temple and thus the Makara Jyothi Temple, which are also considered holy and spiritual.
