Mostly known for its royal Bengal tigers, the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is a famous tiger reserve. These are a typical fauna of central India with a habitat supporting 22 species of mammals. Among the primates are the common langur and the rhesus macaque. The carnivorous species include the jackal, the Bengal fox, Melursus ursinus, the rattle, the grey mongoose (small Indian) and the red mongoose, Hyaena hyaena, the wolf, the wild dog, Felis chaus, the leopard as well as the tiger are the most numerous. The ungulates (animals that walk on the tips of their toes) include chital, sambar, muntjac, chinkara, chousingha, nilgai and wild pig.
Several of its mammals are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, as are the dog, Bengal fox, Melursus ursinus, leopard and tiger.

It is also known to be the hunting destination of the Maharaja of Rewa. Furthermore, the park is also the famous natural centre of white tigers. Although white tigers have now become a major attraction in zoos around the world, they were discovered for the first time in Rewa relatively soon afterwards. It has been classified as a national park in 1968. Since then numerous efforts have been made to conserve it. Early in the morning after breakfast, head to Kanha National Park. It will take about 6 hours by road to reach Kipling country, which is an impressive nature reserve in India. It lies in two main valleys, Halon in the east and Banjar in the west. Surrounded by tufts of the forest, the “good” grasslands are home to a large number of herbivores. There are large plateaus in the hills (locally called “Dadars”) and are therefore characterised by extensive meadows and few trees.

During the 1930s, the area around Kanha was divided into two sanctuaries: Hallon and Banjar, each with an area of 250 km2 and 300 km2. While one was later dissolved, the world remained protected until 1947. However, the depletion of the tiger population in the following years led to the world becoming an absolute sanctuary in 1952.
