Gujarat has vivid historical associations with many great proponents of peace. One of them is Mahatma Gandhi. Popularly known as ‘Mahatma’ (great soul) and ‘Bapu’ in India.
Gujarat was the land where he was born in Porbandar, schooled in Rajkot where he was inspired by most of his ideals, went to college in Bhavnagar and spent important years in Ahamedabad launching a non-violent struggle for India’s freedom and working for the eradication of social problems like caste-discrimination.
Day 01 Ahmedabad – Porbandar
On arrival at Ahmedabad assist by our representative and drive towards Porbandar, where Gandhi ji was born on 2nd October 1869 in a prominent family. His house in the old walled quarters of the city where Gandhiji was born and now open for visitors. Beside the haveli is the Kirti Mandir built in memory of the Mahatma Gandhi which has a museum, picture gallery and library. Evening meditation at Porbandar, dinner at night. Stay overnight at hotel.
Day 02 Porbandar – Rajkot – Ahmedabad
After breakfast, proceed to Rajkot where Gandhiji went to school. See his childhood home called “kaba Gandhi no delo” in local language which has a display of artifacts and photographs from the mahatma’s life. In the eveninh, visit the Sabarmati ashram at Ahmedabad from where Mahatma launched his struggle for freedom. Dinner and night halt at hotel in Ahmedabad.
After breakfast, go for the heritage walk, a 1.5 km walking tour. The walking tour will take you through old quarters and cul-de-sacs called pols to see havelis, courtyard temples with intricate wood work, textile, silver jewellery, gold, stationary and vegetable market, and the mausoleum of Ahmed shah who founded Ahmedabad, before ending at Jumma Masjid, a 15th century mosque rated among the most impressive Islamic monuments in India. Post lunch departure for surat. Dinner and night halt at hotel in surat.
Day 04 Surat – Dandi – Ahmedabad
Departure to Dandi after early breakfast. Visit Dandi (the detination of salt satyagrah). Departure for Ahmedabad via Vadodara (visit Gaekwad museum and Baroda Museum). Arrival at Ahmedabad by late evening. You will be dropped at the airport for your onward journey.
