In the years between 1572 and 1585 A.D., Mughal Emperor Akbar built his capital at Fatehpur Sikri in red sandstone. The Emperor, who wished to have a son, is said to have gone to Sikri to be blessed by the Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chishti. The emperor was soon blessed with a son and was encouraged to determine his capital here, building a magnificent mosque and three palaces, one for each of his three favorite wives. He named the city Fatehpur Sikri, which means the city of victory. He also named his son Salim, in honor of the saint who had blessed him.
